The first half is perfect '60s boy-meets-girl bubblegum pop and the second half consists of five ballads that are tender and vulnerable and unlike anything that was being recorded at the time. It was also an indication of the path that Brian Wilson was taking and would later evolve into on Pet Sounds.
Trying to keep up with the Beatles began taking its toll on Wilson. In December of '65, he suffered a nervous breakdown and informed the band that something had to give. That "something" was touring. He remained in the studio creating the music while the band went out on the road and played it for their fans. The plan worked and the album was a #4 hit in the US and later a #6 hit in the UK. It even spawned their second #1 hit (a reworked version of "Help Me, Rhonda" -- with an added "H").
